FIVE YEARS
600 HIGHWAYMEN
FIVE YEARS is the first moving-image installation by artists Abigail Browde and Michael Silverstone (600 HIGHWAYMEN). Drawn from thousands of moving photographs made across rural New York between 2019 and 2024, the work fills four enormous screens with images and sound.
Everyday rituals, strange encounters, flashes of astonishing beauty and unease: hands at work, kitchens and parking lots, parades and protests, flags and guns, ice storms, pleasure, rage–all seen side by side at mammoth scale. A child is born. Image after image, the world gets larger, and an America comes into view. The portrait becomes stranger, thornier, harder to resolve. An epic of intimacy. This is a home movie.
FIVE YEARS unfolds over 60 minutes, across four synchronized screens, with original music in full surround sound.
Audiences are seated, and the work has a clear beginning and end. It can be presented as a theatrical event, or in a gallery setting with timed entry.
“I wish to hear anything that 600 HIGHWAYMEN has to say…
their guilelessness is central to their beautiful art.
– The New Yorker
“Simple but sublime …
the awesome strangeness, and the utter ordinariness, too,
of being alive in the here and now.”
– The New York Times
Abigail Browde and Michael Silverstone have worked together since 2009 as 600 HIGHWAYMEN.
Their work has been presented internationally at Centre Pompidou and Parc de la Villette (France), Salzburg Festival (Austria), Singapore International Festival of Arts, Zürcher Theater Spektakel (Switzerland), Onassis Stegi (Greece), The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi, Walker Art Center, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, among others.
Browde and Silverstone are 2025 Guggenheim Fellows and alumni of the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Residency. Named to Fast Company 's list of Most Creative People, they have received an Obie Award, Switzerland’s ZKB Patronage Prize, and fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts. They are Associate Artists of IN SITU, the European platform for artistic creation in public space.
